From the Feb. 7 issue of Steeple Views:

A Tribute to Rev. Jon Regen

As a former Pastor of First Presbyterian, I was privileged to follow Jon Regen. I did not know Jon when I arrived in February of 1984, but I began to hear many good things about him. After I met him and was with him on other occasions through the years, all of those good things about Jon were confirmed. I especially appreciated his keen sense of humor, his intelligence, and his deep appreciation for Presbyterian heritage and Reformed theology. As we ministers move from church to church over the course of our ministries, we are indeed fortunate when we follow a person who has built on the traditions and accomplishments of past leadership. Such was my good fortune. Jon was a strong preacher, an able worship leader and a caring pastor.

As an example of his wit, when Jon and I shared in the marriage ceremony of his son, William, and Harriett Mauck, on the night of the rehearsal, he came to me and said, “You start the rehearsal, and I am going to the enter the Sanctuary disguised with a wig, a beard and wearing shabby clothes. I will sit in a pew close to the front.” So, after the wedding party had gathered at the front of the Sanctuary, Jon entered and sat down. William and Harriett looked at him, and at one another, no doubt thinking, “Who is this man? And, whose side of the family is he from?" Well, the ruse did not last long, and everyone had a good laugh. Such was Jon Regen. We will miss him and are thankful that he is an important part of the history of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville.
