Back-2-School Project Volunteer Training Aug. 3

Thursday, August 3, 6:00 PM - Training and Organizing for the Big Day

In the Fellowship Hall and other areas of the lower level.

Saturday, August 5, 7:00 AM–1:00 PM - The Big Day

All the preparation for Back-2-School leads up to this day. Our church Fellowship Hall will be busy all morning carrying the mission. Coffee and donuts will be provided for volunteers, who should arrive at 7:00 AM to get ready for the arrival of the first group of kids at 7:30 or 8:00. Children are assigned times every half hour until all are served (around 1:00 PM). The volunteer jobs listed below need to be filled. Training will be held on Thursday, August 3, at 6:00 PM, plus everything will be prepared and set up for Saturday's event. Contact Tracy Hinchcliff at 409-330-0847 or tracyhair60@gmail.com, if you have not already signed up to help. Be sure to wear your T-shirt (new volunteers will receive one Saturday or at training).

Parking lot attendant: You will be out by the street and in the parking lot directing folks how to get into the church.

Greeter: You will greet the kids and their families with lots of love and smiles and direct them to the check-in table.

Check-In Table: You will check the kids off the master list, give them their name tag lanyards, and make sure that the kids who want a haircut receive their voucher. All kids will also receive a free ticket to the Touch-a-Truck expo at the Speedway.

General Direction Guides: You will be there to guide the families to the different stations, directing them from the check-in table to the story time room and interacting with the kiddos!

Story Time Room: You will be helping to tell the story of Manny, the Founder  of Samaritans Feet, which is what this is all about! Master story teller Jo Dykes  will head up this team.

Foot Washers: You have the best job of all, washing the kids’ feet and fitting  them with new socks and shoes. This is a wonderful time to just talk to the  kids, get to know their dreams and let them know that Jesus is with them all of  the time and loves them! If you work on this team, you may have to step out  of your comfort zone and pray out loud to the child. But it is an absolutely  wonderful experience that you will never forget! We will have at least 15 foot  washing stations so we need a lot of volunteers for this. You will need to be on  your knees, although we will provide a pad, and it can be taxing on your back.  This position may be a little tougher physically—but worth it!

Foot Tub Fillers: You will be in the kitchen to fill tubs with warm water,  receive emptied used tubs to clean and disinfect with wipes and then fill again  —over and over and over!

Foot Tub Runners: You will be the ones to take the full tubs to the washers,  empty the old tubs when kids are finished, and take them to the kitchen to be  filled again. This needs to be someone who can walk fast but safely and be  sure on their feet! You will also be helping to wipe up spills (mop provided).

Sock and Shoe Runners: You will be getting the right size for each kid. The  shoes will be pre-sorted in a separate space by size and gender. You will be  provided the correct shoes by the shoe team.

Shoe Team: You will stay in the shoe sorting room and keep track of the  shoes as they go out. If they see a shortage or a problem, you will need to get  a troubleshooter to make a run to Walmart for the right shoes. Although we  measure each kid at registration, sometime that just doesn’t work out!

Troubleshooter: You need to be willing to do just about anything! You may  need to run to the store, or just take the place of another person’s job while  they go to the restroom or take a break—a very flexible position.

Backpack Brigade: You are the last stop for the kids. When they have  received all of the services, all the kids will get a bagged breakfast or lunch  from the public feeding program, receive a free book from Smart  Beginnings and, lastly, an age-appropriate backpack full of supplies.
