Church Committees
A committee is how we as Presbyterians get our work done: by working together to achieve a common goal. Our church has seven committees. They are: Adminstration/Planning, Christian Education, Congregational Care/Fellowship, Facilities, Mission/Evangelism, Stewardship/Visioning, and Worship Committees. The Admin/Planning Committee consists of a minimum of three elders plus additional volunteers to provide oversight for the following: Personnel matters, Budget, Church Office Operations, Special Funds, Annual Audit, Financial Reports, Memorial Book, Columbarium Garden, Presbytery Schedule, Church Elections, Congregational Meetings, Committee Assignments, Officer Handbook, and the Annual Calendar. The Committee meets monthly on the First Monday of the Month at 7:00PM at the Church. Action items from the committee are presented to the Session for approval. Learning is a life-long endeavor for all Christians. The Christian Education Committee is responsible for providing educational opportunities for children, youth, and adults, so all people in our congregation and the community have opportunities to grow in their Christian faith. The Christian Education Committee is responsible for Sunday School for all ages, Youth Fellowship, Youth Jam, the Library, the Nursery, the Weekday School, the Early Learning Intervention Program, Vacation Bible School, and Camps and Conferences, including Massanetta Springs and Montreat Youth Conferences. Gavin Russell is the chair and Bill Peterson is the vice-chair. Other committee members include: Janet Fentress, Gavin Russell, JoAnne Sanders, Wendy Seamon, Susan Smith, and Laura Stevens, The Reverend Randy Stevens and Debbie Youngman, church librarian, provide staff support. The committee meets monthly on Monday afternoons at 6:00 p.m. The primary goal of the Congregational Care Committee is to carry out the Session's responsibility to maintain an active and tight-knit congregation that is inviting to new members and nurtures the involvement of long-term members. The committee meets on a monthly basis and generates and fosters activities that will enable the comittee to meet its goals. Nancy Davis is the Chair of the Congregational Care Committee. Reverend Randy Stevens provides staff support. The Fellowship Committee plans meals, receptions, and other special fellowship events for our congregation. This committee plans the 6 weekly Wednesday evening dinners prior to our Wednesday evening Lenten worship services, light refreshments in the fellowship hall after the contemporary worship service, congregational lunches following the 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning worship service, and lemonade on the lawn. Paul Cannaday is the Chair of the Fellowship Committee and Reverend Randy Stevens is the staff representative to the committee. The Facilities Committee carries out the responsibility of assuring all physical property, grounds and furnishings remain in good condition for the various church missions. In carrying out these responsibilities the committee oversees all maintenance and imporvements to church buildings and grounds including custodial services and a regular maintenance schedule, provides periodic inspections of the building, oversees the security and safety of the church facilities and grounds including unlocking and relocking the church for church functions, receives requests and provides for the purchase of all non-expendable furnishings and equipment, and oversees the maintenance and use of the church bus. In addition, this Committee recommends policies for the use of the church facilities and equipment including the sanctuary and chapel, confers with the Pastors and Worship Committee Chair to recommend canceling worship services because of inclement weather, perform duties for the General Memorial Fund by maintaining a list of appropriate memorial gift items for the church for potential donors and purchase general memorial items as funds become available and as approved by the Session, and makes recommendations to the Session of any long-range needs for consideration by the Session and/or congregation. The Committee meets monthly on the second Wednesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. at the church. David King is the Chair of the Facilities Committee and Manly Boyd is the Vice-Chair for 2009. There are three elders on the Committee including the Chair and the Vice-Chair plus additional volunteers to carry out the mission of this committee. Reverend Randy Stevens is the staff representative. The role of the Mission/Evangelism Committee at First Presbyterian Church is to lead the congregation in ministries of personal and social healing and reconciliation in our community where we bear witness. Leading the congregation to discover what God is doing in our church, community and world, planning for change, renewal and reformation under the Word of God is vital to our beliefs. By revealing the needs of our brothers and sisters around us, we encourage congregational members to work towards fulfilling such needs by volunteering with and financially supporting agencies involved in meeting those needs. The Mission/Evangelism Committee meets the first Tuesday each month at 5:30 PM.. Lang Mauck is chairperson of the committee and Cindy Franck is the Co-Chair. Rev. Randy Stevens is the staff representative. Other 2009 members include, Darla Main-Schneider, Jim Stegall, Bill Kirby, Cora Nemec, Doris Marshall, Nancy Baker and Susan Pilson. The Stewardship/Visioning Committee promotes good stewardship by providing opportunities for the congregation to share their time, talents, money, and resources in multiple ways and by executing long range planning activities that will ensure faithful use of all resources. Anne Vippermann is the Chairperson of the committee and Denise Unterbrink is the Vice-Chair. Rev. Randy Stevens is the staff person who meets with this committee. The Worship Committee of First Presbyterian Church is responsible for leading our congregation in the worship of God through a traditional service and a contemporary service. It is the goal of the committee to provide worshipful, spiritual opportunities for all members of the congregation. This committee is responsible for maintaining every aspect of worship including preparations for communion on the first Sunday of every month, videotaping and audio taping both services, organizing and leading Children's Worship services, preparing Laity Sunday services, planning for lay readers of scripture, organizing spiritual retreats, and ensuring flowers are available for services. The Worship Committee meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:00 in the Reed Classroom. Catherine Bridges is the chair of the committee and Betty Stanley is vice chair. Reverend Randy Stevens is the staff representative, as well as Bob Chapman, adult music director, Cynthia Dobrinski, organist, and Betsy Haskins, children/youth music director and Contemporary Worship Music Leader. Other members include Darla Main-Schneider, Gene Stanley, Sandra Ford, Ashby Pinkard, Tommy Martin, Bill Peterson, Melissa Wingfield, Gael Chaney, Cathy Stone, and Margaret Knight. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
